Day 28
Day 28: October 26, 2021 (Kirbyville TX to Oberlin LA)
This completes 4 weeks on the road, and I am finally out of Texas. I like Texas. The people were friendly and supportive, the food was good. But damn; it is one big state. 14 days to cross it and I hated the 75 mph no shoulder single lane roads.
Kelly fixed flat tires 10 and 11 today. All but one of them have been on the recumbents and 9 of 10 of them are front tires. I’m down to one spare front tire and one spare tube. The gravel road bike is holding up well and no flat tires yet. Yes, I’m tempting fate by mentioning it.
Nice ride today. Flat roads with big shoulders, no wind and it was overcast. Averaged almost 15 mph, which is good for me. Finished today’s ride with some energy. We are staying near a Casino near Kinder LA; just outside Oberlin. Kelly and I went there for lunch. As Casinos go, it is a nice one; too smokey though.
As I write this at 5 PM on the 26th, Dave Marr and his wife Sabrina have not yet arrived. They are joining Kelly and me for tomorrow through Friday. Dave must be back in NYC for his show over the weekend. While Dave and I have become good friends over the last 18 months, we have not yet met in person. I excited to finally meet face to face.
To make this even more special, Dave’s 60th birthday is Thursday, and he is spending it with me on the road to help fight child abuse. Says a lot about the kind of person Dave is. I hope I don’t fall asleep before they get here. I’ve been falling asleep the last couple of nights at 7:30 and up the next morning at 3:30.
On “My Story” front, I finished my detailed outline. It is 84 pages long. I’ll start writing tonight.
Tomorrow’s forecast is for thunderstorms most of the day. I have the CNN interview tomorrow afternoon and another interview with a local paper in the morning. I’ll do my best to make them.
That’s all for today. Thanks for reading my daily journal. If I may ask, please shoot me a text at (214) 676-1020; I’d love to hear from you. Please include your name so I know who you are.
Have a great rest of your day.
